Landscape Painting with Dad
I go painting with my dad quite often. This last weekend we went to Paramount Ranch. If you haven't been there to paint plein air, you're crazy! It has an old ghost town-looking set that was the backdrop for Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman and many other western sets from 1927 until present day. Here are my gouache efforts. The smaller two are 1.5" x 2.5" done in my moleskine sketchbook and the larger painting is on about 5" x 7" piece of illustration board. If you want to see my dad's he'll post it soon at his blog: http://sketchpainting.blogspot.com/

Lovely gouache paintings! I really like your loose stuff and the portraits. Thanks for the kind words and checking out my work.
man these look super fun.
i quess im one crazy mofo........in never heard of this place.
Awesome stuff Craig! You just reminded me of how much fun and relaxing it is to paint outdoors. Gotta get outta the studio more.
wow, you have some amazing work man, great blog.
Craig these paintings are very nice!
Nice job.It is a great idea to go out and paint landscapes. I have been thinking about that.
nice work craig. i've never been able to conquer the landscape. i get overwhelmed and find it difficult to distill all the complexity into one image.
the ranch sounds like a good place to visit. i will have to get out there.
i think i prefer the smaller paintings as they seem more direct and graphic.
Thank you all for your comments! Did I mention the ranch is free to visit? You all should really check it out.
Dorota & Eric - you should totally do it. I'd love to see your takes on landscape painting.
John - I feel overwhelmed as well trying to fit all that complexity into a simple painting. That's why I went smaller and the result was more direct and took less time. I keep going anyway partly because I love going with my dad and partly because I hope to conquer the medium someday. I find gouache exhausting.
Good job! I love it^^
Very cool. I think the idea of someone going out painting with their Dad is fantastic. This looks like a place I'd like to visit.
By the way, you have a lot of blogs!
Beautiful stuff all around Craig! I can't believe I've never seen your blog(s) before. You are a talented guy. Thanks for your kind comments by the way.
